Movie Story

Sicario (2015) is a tense thriller set against the background of the drugs war waged between US enforcement agencies and Mexican drug traffickers. It vividly depicts the damage that trade has caused and continues to cause.

Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is a young and idealistic FBI agent who finds herself embroiled in violence and human tragedy after she volunteers to joins a government ‘black ops’ task force trying to police the harsh border area between the United States and Mexico. The team, led by Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and including a mysterious but taciturn assassin named Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), is locked in pitiless battle with Mexican drug cartels that employ murder and brutality as a matter of routine. As she learns more about the horrors confronting her, Macer is forced to question the validity of her conventional moral standards and whether it is acceptable to embrace less principled methods to achieve the greater good. Mexico, meanwhile, is revealed as ‘a land of wolves’ in which such usual human values as idealism and decency have little relevance. Sicario, incidentally, means ‘hitman’ in Spanish.

The film was directed by Denis Villeneuve and won critical praise both for its unflinching depiction of a real modern tragedy and for its unremitting tension. The three main characters were also singled out for the quality of their performances, as was the cinematography of Roger Deakins. The film received three Oscars nominations in 2016.

This is an exciting though frequently harrowing watch, with frequent bloody violence and a level of intensity rarely equalled in other movies. The plot lacks complexity at times, but the impressive performances of Blunt, Brolin and Del Toro are enough to hold the interest. Worth seeing.

Sicario is an exciting and beautifully shot film, however It isn’t one of those movies you would want to re-watch.

The plot was thrilling and every character was well written and interesting, Emily Blunt was simply fantastic! I was able to feel the emotion of the characters and it felt dark.

It brought my mood down, but it was worth it, I wouldn’t want to miss out on such an amazing piece of art.

Denis Villeneuve must surely be considered one of the most talented young directors currently plying his trade in Hollywood. Crime-thriller Sicario is another in a line of acclaimed features from the Canadian. Unrelenting tension and a piercing score make Sicario one of the greatest crime-thrillers of recent years.

Sicario is one of the most refreshing Crime-Action movies I’ve seen in many years. Emily Blunt was wonderful alongside Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, an odd by satisfying combination. The film kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me a insightful albeit entertaining look into the narc wars that take place everyday on our countries border.
